When planning your wedding there are many different vendors you have to research, talk to and book - a florist being one of them. Florists usually range from a more affordable option such as a supermarket to a higher end professional florist and everything in between. As there are so many ways to research and find your florist - there are also a number of different factors to consider when choosing your florist. Check out our list below of topics to consider when finding your florist on Cape Cod. Budget Your budget should be considered when you are looking into any of your vendors, but when finding your florist it is always a good idea to have a number in mind of what you expect to spend on your flowers. If you present that number to your florist ahead of time it can be easier for them to recommend certain flowers, bouquets and centerpieces that would fit in your price range. Past Weddings Most florists will have hundreds of photos they can show you of past weddings they have done. Really look through their website and social media accounts to see that they have done pieces that fit your vision. If you are looking to go a bit outside the box, be sure you see photos in their portfolio that are fun and different, which shows you that they can really accept any challenge and are not always working with roses and hydrangeas! Work with Your Vision As I mentioned briefly above, you want to make sure that the florist you choose is willing to work with you on your vision and can already ensure you that what you are picturing in your head will be your final product. Ask if they can show you something similar to what you want to do - either in photos or with flowers they may have on hand. Personality When booking any vendor for your wedding, be sure that you enjoy their personality. You will be in contact with them many times throughout the whole process so you want to make sure you enjoy having conversations with them! You also want to make sure you feel that they are invested in you and that you can trust them to do their job. Also be sure they show confidence that they can get the job done! Know Flowers and Alternatives When you start to look for your flowers on pinterest or instagram and on other wedding websites, you may find yourself in love with tulips, but with a September wedding it may not work out. Be sure that when you meet with a florist and you tell them what flowers you are envisioning that they can tell you if they will be in season on your wedding date. And if not, they should be able to tell you alternatives for those flowers that would still be beautiful, but would save you money! You usually can get most any flowers at any time of year, but it depends on if they can get the flowers locally or if they have to shop them in from around the world! Bouquets, centerpieces, ceremony arrangements, flower crowns, even cake flowers get TONS of love… we thought we should share a little love for the boutonniere. The small arrangement for the groom and his party can be extremely intricate or very simple. Lots of time & design go into creating the perfect bundle. We have some tips to make sure the 'bout' gets a little extra attention… Make it personal! Some of our favorite boutonnieres have a story behind the design or have sentimental value to the couple or to the groom. There are lots of ways to tie personal touches into your boutonniere. It can be as simple as a collection of the bride’s favorite flowers or you can bring in more detail, like including a miniature photo or a family crest. Try something new!
Classic is never a bad thing!Add some color! It doesn’t have to be a flower! We’ve never met a boutonniere we didn’t like. Try a boutonniere pin, paper flower, shells or fabric. Or consider a mix of flowers and a non-floral item of meaning. It’s a great way to show off a little of your personality and add some whimsy to your wedding look! Finally, get the groom involved. He may share some ideas you would never have thought of!
Your personal flowers that is! What are personal flowers? Personals are bouquets for you and your bridesmaids, boutonnieres for the guys and flowers for special guests like parents, grandparents, ushers and readers. Depending on the style and size of your wedding you may have some, none or all of these - so today we review your options and how you can even reuse them if possible! Bridal Bouquet Your bridal bouquet should be a beautiful culmination of flowers that you love and it doesn't necessarily have to match your look. We have seen bridal bouquets that are huge and filled with flowers and we have seen some that are simple and just a couple of stems of delphinium orchids. Whatever it is you want, discuss the flowers you love with your florist and they will work on coming up with something that will fit your personality, your theme and your budget. Typically bridal bouquets start around $150+ and they can be re-purposed on your head table or sweetheart table or just placed next to your cake. Bridesmaid Bouquets It is typical that your bridesmaids will carry bouquets as well, as without them they really don't have a place for their hands. These bouquets may be a smaller version of yours with a pop of color or they can be totally different. They can each carry a different flower, just a stem or a bunch of flowers that mimic your overall look. Bridesmaids bouquets typically start around $85 and they can be reused as part of a centerpiece, on a mantle, on your escort card table or other clever places throughout your reception. Ask your planner or florist for ideas! Boutonnieres The groom and groomsmen are usually adorned with a boutonniere as well. For the guys it is typical for the groom to have a special flower or two and then the groomsmen to have something similar but a lot smaller. The groom may have something more neutral and the groomsmen have a pop of color. Ultimately it is up to you and the men! Boutonnieres start around $15 and are worn all night! Others that wear boutonnieres are the fathers of the bride and groom, grandfathers, ring bearer (depending on his age) and ushers. Mothers & Grandmothers It is always such a nice gesture to honor the mothers and grandmothers at your wedding and there are a couple of ways you can do this. For moms, I always recommend asking if they want something and confirming what they want. You can offer them a wrist corsage, a pin on, a posey (small bouquet) or a purse pin on. Sometimes moms decide they don't want to wear or carry anything, so it is best to give them the option. For grandmothers we recommend either a wrist corsage or pin on corsage - but also best to check with them to see what will work with what they are wearing! Flower Girl Your adorable flower girl has so many options now a days! From flower crowns to wands and baskets with petals, it all really depends on the age of your flower girl and what your ceremony venue will allow. Some churches do not allow for petals on the aisle, so be sure to check before you promise your flower girl tossing petals! Special Guests There are always some special guests you want to honor at your wedding and flowers are a great way to do this. Those special guests would be God parents, your officiant (if he or she is a friend or family member) and readers. There are many styles to offer them - similar to the mothers, grandmothers and boutonnieres, it just depends on the guest and what they would prefer. Two weeks ago I had the pleasure to spend an evening with flowers, wine and the lovely Patrice Milley of Patrice R. Milley Florals. I thought that it may be good to know some tricks of the trade in case I ever have to throw together an emergency centerpiece or boutineer! So I reached out to Patrice and she was willing to teach me some of her secrets! After opening the wine and catching up a bit about our past weddings, she jumped right in and showed me how to make a boutineer. After mastering the complicated floral tape, I completed task #1 with great success. Unfortunately no photo proof of this one, but it was a beautiful pink rose, which we then turned into a corsage. Lucky me, I got to try my luck with the floral tape again!! Then it was on to the centerpiece. Patrice had me all set-up with a white basket, lined with a plastic container, water and foam. She was also prepared with greens and flowers of the season (as she knew I was going to be taking this home to a jewelry party I was holding that weekend!). Patrice demonstrated a couple of techniques for placement into the foam, and then I was off. With only a couple minor corrections from Patrice, I think I came up with a beautiful product!! Granted I don't think I will be quitting my day job quite yet! Patrice also sent me home with my own "Emergency Flower Kit" - with everything from the tricky green tape, floral wire, a knife for trimming flowers and a couple floral sticks for the off chance that any boutineer should get beheaded! A huge thank you to Patrice for a fun evening! Next I hope to join her in action when she is actually preparing for a wedding next month! That should be a blast - as long as she doesn't put me on boutineer duty!! |
